WPI Women's Soccer Defeats Salve in Season Opener

Box ScoreNewport, RI - Seven different players scored for WPI in a 7-0
non-conference women's soccer win over Salve Regina University that
was the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island,
WA) opened the scoring for the Engineers (1-0) when she
corralled a corner kick from Ashley Maiorano
(Southampton, MA) and put it past Salve goalie Katie
Vaudrain (Pawtucket, RI) (8 saves) just 4:30
into the game. The duo reversed roles in the 12th minute, as
Maiorano scored off an assist from Moody, who added another assist
in the second half.
Adding goals for WPI were Amanda Gurnon (Tolland,
CT), Sophia D'Angelo (Dayton, OH), Kelly
Thompson (Pine Brush, GA), Julia
Berg (Cambridge, MA) and Krista
Baker [FR\Medway, MA]. D'Angelo, Thompson, Baker and
Liz Tuite (Hopkinton, MA) had one assist
each.
WPI goalie Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) made six
saves to post the shutout.
Salve (0-1) got a strong performance from sophomore Samantha
Sandland [SO\Wareham, MA] on defense. Sandland and Vaudrain - a
freshman - each played the entire game for the Seahawks. Salve had
eight freshmen play significant minutes in their collegiate
debut.
Salve Regina hosts Babson College in a non-conference game Saturday
at 4pm. WPI will travel to Western Connecticut on Tuesday for a 7pm
tilt.
