WPI Women's Soccer Goes to 1-1 with Loss to West Conn

Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) scored a pair of goals as the
Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team coasted to
a 5-1 victory over WPI at Westside Athletic Complex Tuesday
night.
The Colonials, now 2-0, did not have a easy go of it early as the
Engineers took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Julia
Berg (Cambridge, MA) with nine minutes remaining in the
first half.
Senior midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT)
knotted the game when she netter her first goal of the season in
the 40th minute of play.
Within the first 12 minutes of the second stanza, WestConn blew
the game wide open with three goals, two by Nathans and an own
goal.
Calie Carter (Lebanon, NH) set up Nathans first
goal in the 51st minute while Gomes led the Iona College transfer
to goal in the 57th minute of play. Nathans leads the Colonials
with three goals on the season.
The Engineers' (1-1) made matters worse when a pass back to keeper
Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) got by the
freshman net minder in the 52nd minute.
Amy Corchard (Monroe, CT) added the final tally,
her first of the season, in the 61st minute.
Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT) made two saves
for the Colonials before yielding to Shannon Cawley for the final
15 minutes. Cawley did not have to make a stop.
Glasson made 10 saves for the Engineers.
WestConn travels to Wheaton College on Saturday, Sept. 9 for a
non-conference meeting at 1pm. WPI will play at Wentworth on
Thursday at 7pm.
