WPI 1, Wentworth 0
Box ScoreBoston, MA --- Freshman midfielder Kelsey
Mawhiney's (Johnston, RI) scored the lone goal in the 21st
minute of action, while junior keeper Nicole
DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) turned aside eight shots for her
second shutout of the season as WPI (2-1) defeated Wentworth
Institute of Technology (0-2), 1-0, in a non-conference contest
played at Sweeney Field.
The Leopards had a pair of scoring opportunities in the fifth
minute of play on consecutive corner kicks, but could only muster
one shot, which sailed wide. Shortly thereafter the two teams
exchanged shots on goal in a span of 30 seconds, but neither could
take the lead.
Off a turnover, Mawhiney was able to beat Leopard junior
Beth Melanson (Lewiston, ME), who had come out to
play the ball, to the left side, giving the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
After the goal, Wentworth managed three shots on goal, but could
not get the equalizer.
Despite holding an 8-6 shot advantage in the second half, Wentworth
was not able to get the ball past DeCampo, who came up big on a
saved corner kick with four minutes to play.
Melanson made four saves to the Leopards who host defending
Commonwealth Coast Conference champion Endicott Saturday at
3:00pm.
WPI will also return to action on Saturday when they entertain
Salem State in their opener at 6:30pm.
