Westfield State Edges WPI Women's Soccer 2-1

Box ScoreWorcester, MA -- Meg Gearin (Groton, MA) netted
a pair of goals in the final ten minutes as Westfield State rallied
to defeat host WPI 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action on
Wednesday evening. With the win, the Owls even their record at 3-3
while WPI drops to 3-4.
Gearin equaled the game for Westfield at 80:02 when she blasted a
feed from Erin Lowney (Westport, MA) past the WPI
goalkeeper. Just over two minutes later, Gearin gave the Owls the
win when her corner kick deflected off several players and crossed
the goal line.
The two Westfield State goals capped a flurry of Owl shots after
goalkeeper Natalia Araszkiewicz (Framingham, MA)
stopped a WPI breakaway with 16 minutes remaining to keep her team
within a goal. On the evening, Araszkiewicz turned away six
shots.
Kelly Thompson (Pine Bush, NY) gave the Engineers
a first half lead when she registered her second goal of the season
off a pass from Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island,
WA) at 34:03.
Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) made three saves
in net for the Crimson and Gray.
Both teams will open up conference play with matches on Saturday.
WPI will travel to Babson for a 1pm NEWMAC contest while Westfield
begins MASCAC play with a 6pm home match versus MCLA.
