WPI Evens Up Record in 2-1 Win over Nichols
WPI 2, Nichols 1
Box ScoreDudley, MA --- The Nichols women's soccer team put in a strong
second half effort but a 2-0 deficit proved to be too much for the
Bison to overcome as they fell 2-1 to WPI on Tuesday afternoon.
Nichols falls to 2-6-1 on the year while WPI evens up its record to
4-4-1.
Senior Ashley Maiorano (Southampton, MA) scored
both goals for the Engineers, her first off a penalty kick in the
first half after Nichols was called for a hand ball inside the box.
WPI maintained possession of the ball for much of the half as it
attempted 11 shots, seven of them on net. Despite the heavy
pressure, freshman Keri Silva's (North Attleboro,
MA) only blemish was the penalty kick as she posted six saves.
Nichols had three quality scoring chances but Elizabeth
Glasson (Worcester, MA) was able to make the hard earned
saves on every play.
Nichols offense came alive in the second half as it doubled its
shot attempts from the first half, this time around getting off 12.
WPI made the Bison comeback attempt that much harder, however, as
Maiorano registered her second goal of the game with 12:35 left to
play.
Sophomore Kaila Gray (Pembroke, NH) made it a one
goal contest when she scored in the 83rd minute off a throw-in by
junior Christina Palmerino (Charlton, MA) but time
went against the Bison as they were unable to get the equalizer
before the final buzzer.
Nichols will return to CCC action on Thursday, Sept. 28 at Anna
Maria. WPI is off until Saturday when they host Mount Holyoke in a
NEWMAC match-up at 11am.
