Box Score
Wellesley, MA --- Four different Wellesley soccer players found
the back of the net on Tuesday afternoon to guide the Blue to a 4-1
win over WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) women's soccer action at Wellesley. The victory is
Wellesley's fourth straight, improving the Blue's record to 7-2 on
the season and 3-0 in the NEWMAC, while WPI evens up its record at
5-5-1 and 1-1-1 in NEWMAC play.
Junior forward Jordan Akerley (Gilford, NH) netted
her first goal of the season when she put Wellesley on the board in
the 17th minute. Akerley tapped in a pass from Jen Lau (Honolulu,
Hawaii) who beat a defender on the right side of the box before she
laid a ball across the six for Akerley to finish. Senior co-captain
Alison Carney (Healdsburg, CA) then played a ball,
splitting the Engineers' defense, to Haley Geller
(Berkeley, CA) who ripped a shot past WPI keeper, Elizabeth
Glasson (Worcester, MA) to give the Blue a 2-0 lead going
into the break.
WPI returned with momentum in the second frame and senior
Kelly Thompson (Pine Bush, NY) cut the score to
2-1 when she broke through on the left side and lofted a ball over
Wellesley goalie Samantha Littlejohn (Dayton, NJ)
in 58th minute. The Blue retaliated shortly after as Lau found the
back of the net off a feed from Geller. Lau's finish marked her
seventh of the season. Carney then added some insurance for
Wellesley when she broke through the Engineers' defense in the 80th
minute and touched the ball past Glasson to give the Blue the 4-1
victory.
Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA). played in the net
for the Blue in the first half, recording one save in her eighth
career start, and Littlejohn finished the game for Wellesley
with four stops. Glasson picked up seventeen saves for WPI in the
loss.
The Blue will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to
Wheaton College for a 2 p.m. contest, while the Engineers will
visit Smith College that same day for a 2:30 p.m. game.
