Smith Rallies to Defeat WPI Women's Soccer 4-2

Northampton, MA --- Smith scored three unanswered goals in the
second half of today's New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) contest against WPI to take a 4-2 victory. With
the win, Smith improves to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference
play while WPI falls to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NEWMAC.
WPI scored the opening goal 12:42 into the game as senior Kelly
Thompson (Pine Bush, NY) went one on one with keeper Lauren
Bachtel (Dublin, OH) and slid the ball past her to give
the Engineers a 1-0 advantage. Smith equalized the score five
minutes later when Brittoni Famous (Collegeville,
PA) headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net off a
corner kick by Caitlin Colman-McGaw (Manchester,
CT). The Engineers scored the go ahead goal at the 32:07 mark when
Ashley Maiorano (Southampton, MA) chipped the ball
to Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA) who found
the back of the net to give WPI a 2-1 halftime lead.
The second half belonged to the Pioneers as they outshot the
visitors thirteen to three. First year Sara
Dilegge (Mashpee, MA) tallied her first goal of the season
at the 48:54 mark with the assist from Dalyn
Houser (Atlanta, GA). Houser followed with her own goal
eight minutes later as she followed through on a shot that dribbled
off the hands of keeper Liz Glasson (Worcester,
MA). Famous picked up her second goal of the day with eight minutes
remaining in the game with the assist from Houser to round out the
scoring for the Pioneers.
Smith will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to NEWMAC
and valley rival Mount Holyoke for a 4 p.m. game.
WPI also returns to action on Tuesday with a conference match at
city rival Clark at 6:30pm.
