Wheaton Posts Win over WPI Women's Soccer 5-1

Box ScoreWorcester, MA --- Five different Wheaton players tallied goals
as the Lyons clinched their eighth straight outright NEWMAC regular
season championship with a 5-1 victory over host WPI Saturday
evening.
Wheaton, ranked sixth nationally in the latest D3Kicks.com national
poll and second in the most recent NCAA Division III New England
rankings, has now won 14 straight matches and improves to 17-1
overall and 8-0 in NEWMAC play. WPI falls to 6-9-1 on the season
and 2-5-1 in conference action.
The Lyons opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a goal from
Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA) off a feed from
Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA). The Lyons added to
their lead 13 minutes later when Angelamaria
Viscomi (Newton, MA) found the back of the net following a
pass from Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA). Wheaton took
a 3-0 advantage into the intermission after Kathleen
Carroll (New Paltz, NY) blasted home a pass from
Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA) in the 32nd
minute
WC wasted no time adding to its lead as Laura
Konopka (Medford, NJ) scored just over two minutes into
the second stanza following a series of nifty passes from Viscomi
and Levy. The goal was a milestone as Konopka became the sixth
player in Wheaton history to reach the 100 point mark.
Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX) rounded out the
scoring for the Lyons when she knocked home a pass from
Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA) in the 67th
minute.
WPI broke into the scoring column when senior Ashley Maiorano
(Southampton, MA) buried a cross from classmate Kelly
Thompson (Pine Bush, NY) in the 73rd minute. The goal
broke a string of 500:41 scoreless minutes for the Wheaton defense.
The Lyons had allowed just three goals in the last 14 matches prior
to Saturday.
Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA) turned away
three shots in 50:30 of action for Wheaton, while Elana
Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA) made two saves in 29:30 of
play. Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) and
Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) each played a half
in net for WPI, making three and two saves respectively.
Both teams will close out regular season play on Tuesday. WPI will
travel to defending NEWMAC Tournament champion Springfield for a
7pm contest while Wheaton plays host to Mount Holyoke at 3:30pm.
The NEWMAC tournament begins on Saturday, October 28th.
