Worcester, MA --- Five different Wheaton players tallied goals as the Lyons clinched their eighth straight outright NEWMAC regular season championship with a 5-1 victory over host WPI Saturday evening.

Wheaton, ranked sixth nationally in the latest D3Kicks.com national poll and second in the most recent NCAA Division III New England rankings, has now won 14 straight matches and improves to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in NEWMAC play. WPI falls to 6-9-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in conference action.

The Lyons opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a goal from Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA) off a feed from Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA). The Lyons added to their lead 13 minutes later when Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA) found the back of the net following a pass from Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA). Wheaton took a 3-0 advantage into the intermission after Kathleen Carroll (New Paltz, NY) blasted home a pass from Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA) in the 32nd minute

WC wasted no time adding to its lead as Laura Konopka (Medford, NJ) scored just over two minutes into the second stanza following a series of nifty passes from Viscomi and Levy. The goal was a milestone as Konopka became the sixth player in Wheaton history to reach the 100 point mark. Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX) rounded out the scoring for the Lyons when she knocked home a pass from Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA) in the 67th minute.

WPI broke into the scoring column when senior Ashley Maiorano (Southampton, MA) buried a cross from classmate Kelly Thompson (Pine Bush, NY) in the 73rd minute. The goal broke a string of 500:41 scoreless minutes for the Wheaton defense. The Lyons had allowed just three goals in the last 14 matches prior to Saturday.

Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA) turned away three shots in 50:30 of action for Wheaton, while Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA) made two saves in 29:30 of play. Both teams will close out regular season play on Tuesday. WPI will travel to defending NEWMAC Tournament champion Springfield for a 7pm contest while Wheaton plays host to Mount Holyoke at 3:30pm. The NEWMAC tournament begins on Saturday, October 28th.
