Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore forward Julia Berg (Cambridge, MA) scored two goals and registered an assist to lead WPI to a 3-1 season-opening victory over Salve Regina in non-conference women's soccer action on Friday evening. With the win, the Engineers christened WPI's brand new turf as part of the renovation of Alumni Field over this past summer.

Berg scored in the 10th and 36th minutes to help WPI jump to a 2-0 halftime advantage.  Freshman forward Kristin Garza (Kingston, MA) was credited with assists on both tallies while junior midfielder Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA) chipped in with a helper on the second goal.  Garza then found the back of the net herself in the 65th minute when she notched her first career goal.

Both Berg and Garza amassed four-point nights as the Engineers won their season opener for the second straight season.  Berg's two goals now give her eight in her career after a six-goal campaign in 2006.

Senior midfielder Kacie Gallo (Methuen, MA) scored the lone goal for the Seahawks with an unassisted tally in the 71st minute.

WPI sophomore goalie Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) notched seven saves in the victory, while her Salve Regina counterpart Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, RI) tallied four saves.

WPI enjoys the rest of its weekend off and will play its next game at home on Tuesday at 7pm versus Western Connecticut. Salve Regina is back in action tomorrow at Babson, with the match slated for a 4pm kickoff.
