Centerville, MA --- WPI freshman Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) has been named the 2010 Division III New England Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year as announced by the ECAC last week. The honor is also the first major award from the ECAC in program history.
The forward tallied 13 goals, four assists and five game-winners in 19 games for the Engineers. Forti was also tabbed as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as she scored 18 points, eight goals, three game-winners, and a hat trick. The rookie was one of just two freshmen out of 22 student-athletes to earn all-conference recognition.
WPI used a five-game winning streak at the end of the regular season to earn the fifth seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, where they fell 3-0 on the road to NCAA Tournament participant Wheaton. The Engineers finished the season with a 8-10-1 mark under the tutelage of 16-year head coach Stephanie Carlson.
The ECAC is the nation's largest athletic and the only multi-divisional conference with approximately 300 Divisions I, II, and III colleges and universities from Maine to North Carolina and westerly to Illinois. Established in 1938, the ECAC, a non-profit service organization, sponsors nearly 100 championships in 37 men's and women's sports, assigns more than 4,400 officials in 12 sports, administers nine affiliate sports organizations and six playing leagues and recognizes more than 2,000 student-athletes through the public relations arm of the conference.
