McCrea and Hapgood Notch Early Goals in Women’s Soccer’s Season-Opening Win

WORCESTER -- Juniors Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) and Becca Hapgood (Halifax, MA) each scored a first half goal as the WPI women's soccer team defeated Salem State, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.

McCrea knocked home a cross from classmate Jill Comeau (North Reading, MA) for the first goal of the season at 4:54. Just over 10 minutes later, Hapgood received the ball from McCrea for a long-distance strike.

Senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) stopped six shots, including a diving save in the second half, while Salem State sophomore Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, MA) halted seven shots to go with a team save by junior Devyn Malatesta (Wilmington, MA).

Sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) took aim four times for the Engineers. Sophomore Emily Boyle (Manchester, NH) and junior Kelly Blanchard (Bridgewater, MA) each logged a pair of shots on-goal for the Vikings.

WPI doubled up the Vikings 18-9 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.

The Engineers are back in action Tuesday with a trip to Rhode Island College for a 4pm start. Salem State begins its home slate Saturday at 1pm versus UMass Dartmouth.
