WPI Volleyball Goes 2-2 at the Regis Tournament

Newton, MA --- The "Gary Patch era" got off to a rousing start at the Regis Tournament. WPI captured two victories on Saturday for the first year head coach before dropping a pair of contests on Sunday.

The Engineers opened play with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-23) victory over host Regis followed by a gusty 3-2 (28-30, 25-30, 30-19, 30-20 15-11) come-from-behind win against local rival Worcester State. On Sunday, the Crimson and Gray dropped a 3-1 (30-25, 28-30, 30-26, 30-25) and 3-0 (31-29, 30-20, 30-12) decisions to Lasell and Rivier respectively.

Rookie Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) paced the WPI attack with 36 kills while co-captain Yaralia Castillo (Methuen, MA) tallied 32 kills and 52 digs. Fellow co-captain Jennifer Parker (Rochester, MA) notched an eye-popping 136 assists and Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham/MA) and Katie Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) chipped in with 72 and 70 digs respectively. Freshman Becca Mattern (Rockville, CT) played a huge role in the five-game thriller versus Worcester State by collecting 10 kills, nine aces and three solo blocks.

WPI will return to action on Tuesday when they open up their home schedule with a 7pm match against Simmons.
