Rhode Island College Sweeps WPI 3-0

Providence, RI --- Rhode Island College defeated WPI, 3-0, in collegiate women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening. The Anchorwomen were sluggish at times, but held off the Engineers to improve their record to 5-4 on the season. WPI suffered its fourth consecutive loss and falls to 5-6.

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a decisive, 30-18, win in game one, then held on to win game two, 31-29. RIC outdistanced WPI, 30-21, in game three to take the match.

RIC junior middle hitter Erin Miga (Cranston, RI) posted a match-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Cassandra Taverna (Bedford, MA) and junior right side hitter Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) chipped in with nine and six kills, respectively.

The Anchorwomen's sophomore setter tandem of Amy Souza (Tiverton, RI) and Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) combined for 30 assists with 18 and 12, respectively. Rosa added four service aces and seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, RI) led the squad with nine digs.

WPI sophomore outside hitter Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) led the Engineers with six kills and 13 digs. Senior setter Jennifer Parker (Rochester, MA) posted a match-high 21 assists in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, RIC will open Little East Conference play when the Anchorwomen host Eastern Connecticut and Plymouth State on Saturday, Sept. 16 beginning at noon.
