Coast Guard Defeats WPI Volleyball 3-0

Worcester, MA --- Nicole Gurr (Acton, CA) tallied 19 kills and two solo blocks to help propel Coast Guard to a 3-0 (30-16, 30-12, 30-17) victory over host WPI in NEWMAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening. The win marks the 200th coaching victory for Coast Guard head coach Patty Giannattasio who now sports an impressive 200-98 record over ten seasons at the helm.

Gurr was a dominate force for the Bears, making just five errors in 48 attempts en route to posting a robust .291 hitting percentage. Corrine McCormack (Havertown, PA) added eight kills and nine digs while Christine Rostowfske (Walnut, CA) dished out a match-best 40 assists. Leanna Minton (Antioch, CA) chipped in with nine digs on the evening.

Yaralia Castillo (Methuen, MA) paced the WPI attack with nine kills and 20 digs Jennifer Parker (Rochester, MA) amassed 22 assists for the Engineers while Kate Woodman (Fairfield, CT) and Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) each contributed five kills.

With the win, the Bears improve to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in NEWMAC play. Coast Guard remains in a tie for first place with Wellesley, a 3-2 winner tonight over MIT. WPI falls to 10-14 on the season and 0-7 in conference play.

WPI is off until next Tuesday when they travel to Springfield for a NEWMAC match with the Pride. Coast Guard returns to the court on Saturday when they host a tri-match with Wesleyan and Roger Williams.
