WPI Volleyball loses to Coast Guard 3-0

New London, CT --- Junior Nicole Gurr (Acton, CA) had 20 kills leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-9, 30-21) win over WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
Coast Guard (17-4, 5-2) won the first game 30-21 and jumped out to a commanding 12-2 lead in game two, increased it to 20-5 enroute to a 30-9 win. WPI jumped out to a 5-1 lead and led 10-5 before Coast Guard scored 14 of the next 15 points to take a 19-11 lead before winning game three 30-21.
Sophomores Courtney Wolf
(Fredricksburg, VA) and Carin
Sweeney (Woodbury, MN) each had six
kills while senior Anne
Staley (Manhattan, IL) had 34
assists for Coast Guard.
Junior Christina Grant (Mansfield, MA) led
WPI (11-15, 1-6) with seven kills, sophomore Becca
Holmberg (Madison, CT) paced the way defensive
effort with 12 digs while junior Kathryn
Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) chipped in with eight for the
Engineers. Sarah Artz (Spring Grove,
IL) added four kills without an error in nine attempts (.444
hitting percetange) while Nikki Croteau
(Wilbraham, MA) dished out 25 assists.
The match marked WPI final road match of the season. The Crimson and Gray are off until next Tuesday when they host Springfield at 7pm.
