• Women's Volleyball Receives NEWVA Academic Team Award

    Bristol, RI --- WPI volleyball was honored as one of only 15 teams to receive the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Academic Team Award for the 2008 season. The Academic Team Award was established to recognize the hard work and dedication of student-athletes off the court and in the classroom. Teams must maintain a 3.3 combined GPA to qualify.

    Worcester, MA --- WPI volleyball outside hitter Becca Holmberg has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). It is the first All-District I honor for the Madison, Connecticut native. The junior's selection to the District I first team advances her to the national ballot.

    Babson Park, MA --- A NEWMAC-best five WPI volleyball student-athletes have been named to the conference's 2008 All-Academic Team. They include seniors Nikki Croteau, Christina Grant, and Kathryn Bomba, junior Becca Holmberg and sophomore Samantha Brown. Grant and Bomba take home the honor for the third consecutive year.

    Norton, MA --- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team clinched the seventh seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament by virtue of a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-12) victory over WPI during Senior Day on Saturday in Emerson Gymnasium. The Lyons improved to 13-19 overall and finished NEWMAC play with a 3-6 mark. WPI was eliminated from postseason contention, slipping to 10-17 and 1-8.
  • Volleyball Falls to Springfield on Senior Night

    Worcester, MA --- Heidi Yohe tallied 13 digs to lift Springfield to a 3-0 victory over host WPI in NEWMAC volleyball action on Thursday evening. The Pride took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-10. WPI played a strong first set, rallying from an early four-point deficit to even the match at 20-20 before Springfield scored five of the final seven points.
  • Holmberg Posts Double-Double in Volleyball loss to UMass Dartmouth

    Worcester, MA --- Allie Mastrocola tallied a match-high 14 kills to spark visiting UMass Dartmouth to a 3-0 victory over WPI in non-conference volleyball action on Thursday evening. The Corsairs won the match by scores of 25-17, 28-26 and 25-18. Junior Becca Holmberg paced the WPI attack with 10 kills and 14 digs. It marked her sixth double-double of the season and the 11th of her career.
  • Volleyball Comeback Falls Just Short in 3-2 Loss to Clark

    Worcester, MA --- Amira Tranchell and Maritza Fair combined for 37 kills to help lift Clark to an exciting 3-2 victory over host WPI in NEWMAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening. Clark took the match by scores of 25-22, 26-28, 28-13, 23-25, 15-11. With the result, the Cougars up their record to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in NEWMAC play. The Engineers slip to 10-14 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC action.
  • Volleyball Falls in Pair of Matches at UNE Tri-Match

    Biddeford, ME --- Becca Holmberg and Becca Mattern combined for 36 kills but WPI dropped a pair of matches to Babson and host University of New England in a volleyball tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Enginners are now 10-13 on the season and return home to begin a three-game home stand on Tuesday at 7pm with a key NEWMAC match against crosstown rival Clark.
  • Volleyball Drops NEWMAC Road Match at MIT

    Cambridge, MA --- Following a week hiatus, the MIT volleyball team returned to action with a 3-0 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday. MIT is now 14-11 on the year and 5-1 in league play while WPI fell to 10-11 on the season and 1-5 in the NEWMAC. MIT raced out to an 11-1 lead in the opening frame, but WPI responded with five unanswered points including a pair of kills from Becca Holmberg.

The Engineers defeated Mitchell 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-9) in the opening match before taking a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) win over Bay Path. With the wins, the Crimson and Gray improve to 10-10 overall.

    Northampton, MA --- The Pioneers of Smith defeated the Engineers of WPI 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-20). With the victory the Pioneers raised their overall record to 9-11 (3-2). With the loss WPI fell to 8-10 (1-4) on the year. For WPI, Becca Holmberg finished with eight kills. Additionally, Nikki Croteau contributed 15 assists and two service aces. Joan Porampo added a game-best 14 digs.

With the win, the Engineers up their record to 6-9 while the Gators slip to 5-5. WPI, who was forced to rally from large deficits in the final two sets, took the match by scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 29-27.

    Worcester, MA --- Jessica Duff tallied 11 kills to propel visiting Wellesley to a 3-0 victory over WPI in NEWMAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening. The Blue took the match by game scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-4. With the win, Wellesley improves to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play while the Engineers fall to 5-9 on the season and 1-3 in the NEWMAC. After WPI led 6-1 in opening set, Duff led Wellesley back in convincing fashion.

The Crimson and Gray took the match by game scores of 25-9, 25-19, 25-12. Becca Holmberg paced the offensive attack with seven kills while Christina Grant, Kathryn Bomba and Sarah Artz all added four kills.

    Worcester, MA --- Christina Grant tallied 10 kills and five solo blocks to help WPI rally from 2-0 deficit to defeat visiting Mount Holyoke 3-2 in NEWMAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening. The Engineers took the match by game scores of 18-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-11, 15-10. Grant hit at an impressive .348 clip as she made just two errors in 28 attempts.

With the win, Babson improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Engineers fall to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in NEWMAC action.

    Providence, RI --- Junior outside hitter Sharon Corriveau and sophomore Tess Heidel posted nine kills apiece as Rhode Island College defeated WPI, 3-1, in collegiate women's volleyball action on Thursday evening at The Murray Center. WPI junior outside hitter Becca Holmberg registered a match-high 13 kills, while freshman outside hitter Joan Porambo logged 25 digs.

    New London, CT --- Nicole Gurr had 15 kills and six aces while Courtney Wolf added eight kills and four blocks as Coast Guard won its third straight beating WPI 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-13) in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. Joan Porambo led WPI with five kills and 18 digs while Kathryn Bomba also added 18 digs in the loss.

    North Dartmouth, MA - Junior Becca Mattern was tabbed to the All-Tournament Team as the WPI Volleyball team recorded a 1-1 record in non-conference action at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gray closed out the tournament on a high note with a win over Salem State. The Engineers cruised to a three set victory by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-20.

With the victory, the Engineers improve to 2-1 while Simmons starts its season at 0-1. Holmberg tallied nine kills and made just one error in 15 attempts.
  • WPI Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with Maine Maritime and Norwich

    Worcester, MA --- Norwich won a pair of matches over host WPI and Maine Maritime in a women’s volleyball non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon. WPI defeated Maine Maritime 3-0 in the opening match. In that opener, Becca Holmberg led the way for the Engineers with a .375 hitting percentage.
  • WPI Volleyball Recognized by AVCA for Academic Excellence

    Lexington, KY --- The WPI Volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence during the 2007 season. The team posted a WPI best 3.55 GPA during this past academic year. The AVCA honored a record 353 teams in 2007-2008, including an all-time of 62 in NCAA Division III.
  • Project Complete! Harrington Auditorium Floor Ready for Action

    Worcester, MA --- The construction project that featured a new Harrington Auditorium floor has been competed. The new floor will get quite the workout next week as Basketball and Volleyball camps begin on Monday, July 21st.
