WPI Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with Maine Maritime and Norwich

Worcester, MA --- Norwich won a pair of matches over host WPI and Maine Maritime in a women's volleyball non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon. WPI defeated Maine Maritime 3-0 in the opening match.
In that opener, Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) led the way for the Engineers with a .375 hitting percentage. The biggest of her match-high 13 kills came with WPI trailing 24-23 in set two. Her smash touched the back corner of the in-line and the Crimson and Gray took three of the next four points to secure the pivotal second set.
Christina Grant (Mansfield, MA) chipped in with five kills and two solo blocks while Katie Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) added 16 digs. Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) led all players with 18 assists.
Croteau was fantastic in WPI's 3-1 loss to Norwich. The senior setter tallied 10 kills, 20 assists and 15 digs. Grant added 12 kills while freshman Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) and Holmberg each collected seven kills. Bomba and Holmberg combined for 51 digs, with Bomba tallying 30, her highest total since September of 2006.
In the middle match, Molly Rice (Sunapee, NH) dished out 20 assists in Norwich's 3-0 victory against Maine Maritime. Lisset Magdaleno (Whittier, CA) paced the Cadets with 14 kills while Victoria Miller (Scotia, NY) served four aces.
WPI and Norwich will both return to action on Wednesday at
7pm. WPI will entertain Simmons while the Cadets venture to
Southern Vermont. Maine Maritime is off until next weekend
when they participate in the Colby Tournament on Friday and
Saturday.
