Holmberg Notches 13 Kills in Volleyball Loss at RIC

Providence, RI --- Junior outside hitter Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, RI) and sophomore Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) posted nine kills apiece as Rhode Island College defeated WPI, 3-1, in collegiate women's volleyball action on Thursday evening at The Murray Center.
RIC (3-8) snaps a five-match losing streak with the win, but needed to come back from a 1-0 deficit after one set. The Engineers (3-7), who lose for the sixth straight match, took an early lead with a 25-22 win in the first set.
The Anchorwomen held off late-set comebacks in the second (25-22) and fourth sets (25-23), respectively, and took the third stanza (25-14) decisively in a winning effort.
Senior libero Jackie Gervais (Woonsocket, RI) posted a match-high 30 digs, while sophomore setter Nicole Enos (Coventry, RI) handed out 33 assists.
Junior middle blocker Kristen Johnson (East Providence, RI) was credited with four blocks. Heidel added four aces and 15 digs.
WPI junior outside hitter Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) registered a match-high 13 kills, while freshman outside hitter Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) logged 25 digs. Senior setter Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) posted 26 assists.
In upcoming action, RIC will head to Plymouth State for a tri-match with the Panthers and Eastern Connecticut in the Little East Conference circuit opener. WPI returns to action on Saturday when they host Babson in a NEWMAC contest beginning at 1pm.
