Volleyball Topples Mitchell and Bay Path in Tri-Match Sweep

Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories in a non-conference tri-match on Friday evening.  The Engineers defeated Mitchell 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-9) in the opening match before taking a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) win over Bay Path.  With the wins, the Crimson and Gray improve to 10-10 overall. 

Outside hitter Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) and setter Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) led the WPI attack versus Mitchell.  Holmberg finished with a match-best 14 kills while Croteau handed out 29 assists.  The freshman duo of Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) and Alison Su (Westerly, RI) tallied 11 and nine digs respectively while senior Kathryn Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) smashed four service aces for the Crimson and Gray. 

In the nightcap, sophomore Samantha Brown (Dunbarton, NH) paced WPI with nine kills and posted an impressive .571 hitting percentage while Holmberg chipped in with eight kills.  Croteau dished out another 25 assists while Porambo scooped up six digs. 

Bay Path split their matches on the evening, rebounding from their loss to WPI to take a hard-earned 3-1 match over Mitchell and improve its record to 2-12.  The Mariners finished the night 0-2 to move their season mark to 4-10. 

WPI returns to the court on Tuesday when they travel to MIT for a 7pm NEWMAC affair.  Mitchell will host Elms on Wednesday in a 7pm match while Bay Path is idle until next Saturday when they play a 10am match on the road at Becker.
