Volleyball Defeated on the Road by NEWMAC Foe Wellesley

Wellesley, MA --- Wellesley volleyball stretched its winning
streak to four matches this evening at Keohane Sports Center, with
a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-14) win over WPI. The victory lifts the
Blue to 7-4 overall, 2-1 in NEWMAC competition. WPI drops to
14-3, 1-3 in conference play.
The visting Engineers grabbed a 5-3 edge early in the first set,
but the Blue
pressed back to take a 14-9 lead. Wellesley then took advantage of
two four-point
serving runs, from Elizabeth Campbell (Sonoma
Beach, CA) and Isabel Custodio
(Powell, OH), to take the first set 25-13.
WPI rebounded in the second game, taking an 8-5 lead courtesy of a
run from Bailey
Sarber (Westerly, RI). The Engineers maintained a
three-point advantage until four
straight Wellesley points gave the Blue a 15-14 lead. Wellesley
stretched its lead
to six points, taking 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win.
The Blue carried the momentum into set three, taking an early 5-1
lead. Midway
through the game, Wellesley scored six consecutive points for a
17-7 lead and
cruised to a 25-14 win.
For WPI, Sarber had a team-high five kills while Alex
Rangel (Weston, FL) recorded
16 assists. Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) led all
players with 15 digs, with Joan
Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) and Sarber adding 13 and 12
respectively.
Wellesley was led by Alice Cummings (Tallahasee,
FL) who racked up 12 kills and 13
digs in the match. Also for the Blue, Custodio picked up nine kills
while Campbell
added eight. Noami Iwata (Seattle, WA) recorded a
team-high of 14 digs while
Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, CA) dished out 18
assists.
WPI returns to action on Thursday, October 1, at 7:00p.m., when
they host Pine Manor
College in a non-conference match. Wellesley will travel to the
Tufts Tournament on
Friday for at 5:00 p.m. matchup with Hiram College of Ohio.
