Amrein Helps Key Women’s Volleyball’s Sweep of Southern Maine and Fitchburg State

WORCESTER -- Sophomore Kate Amrein (Nashua, NH) totaled 21 kills as WPI swept Southern Maine and Fitchburg State in a Saturday afternoon women's volleyball tri-match inside Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers defeated the Huskies 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 and came back to down the Falcons 25-16, 25-11, 25-12. Southern Maine won its match with Fitchburg State 25-11, 25-14, 25-11.

WPI ends the day with a 6-0 record as the Huskies move to 3-3 and the Falcons slip to 1-5.

In the eye-opener versus Southern Maine, Amrein smashed 12 kills to lead all student-athletes in the category over the course of the three matches. Sophomore Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) was the only other student-athlete to achieve double-digit kills in one match with 10. Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) doled out 20 assists to go along with 13 from freshman Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA). Amrein also served up a trio of aces. Senior Victoria Nassar (Atkinson, NH) posted 11 digs while classmate Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) delivered nine.

Senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, MN) delivered a double-double of 16 assists and 10 digs for Southern Maine. Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, ME) paced the attack with nine swipes, and classmate Rachel Chillé (Yarmouth, ME) came up with 17 digs. In their second match of the day, Schmitz narrowly missed out on a second double-double with 18 assists and nine digs, while amassing four aces, in the Huskies second match of the day. Foerster almost had a double-double as well with 17 digs and eight kills and freshman Maddy Lockwood (Feeding Hills, MA) handed out nine assists in the effort.

In the Falcons first match, sophomore Jessica Peirce (Brentwood, NH) had a team-best 15 digs followed by senior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, MA) with 10. Pierce delivered 18 more while sophomore Paige Anderson (Winchendon, MA) checked in with 11 in the finale versus the hosts.

Amrein once again paced everyone on the court, this time with nine kills and a team-best 16 digs, in the nightcap. Taylor handed out 17 helpers and Bakhtyari added 13. Freshman Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) chipped in with a dozen digs as sophomore Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA) and freshman Jenna Galli (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) each registered 11. Junior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA).

The Engineers begin NEWMAC action Tuesday with a 7pm home match versus Babson. Southern Maine hosts intrastate rival Bates at the same time, and Fitchburg State enters MASCAC play with a trip to Bridgewater State for a 6pm serve.
