WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon recently announced today the hiring of Alex Temkin as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach.
Temkin brings a wealth of coaching experience to WPI. He spent three seasons as head coach at Division I Maryland Eastern Shore and two years at Division II American International. Temkin also had assistant stints at Mount Holyoke and UMass Amherst as well as a large role with the Husky Volleyball Club of Hartford, CT.
"I am very happy that Alex Temkin will be joining our athletic program," said Harmon. "Alex is an accomplished volleyball player and coach, having success at all NCAA divisions and at the club level. We are looking forward to his leadership of the WPI women's volleyball program."
Temkin complied a conference record of 32-18 during his three years at Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks captured the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division title in 2004, falling to nationally ranked Florida A&M in the conference championship match. While at UMES, Temkin served on the America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Head Coaches Committee.
In 2002 and 2003, Temkin guided AIC to the Northeast 10 tournament. The Yellow Jackets amassed a 35-25 record during his tenure while competing in the highly competitive NCAA Division II Northeast region during his two years at the helm.
"I am happy that I have found a situation where I can part of a program with a great tradition of academics," said Temkin. "I am excited to meet the team and to start the season. One of our goals will be to make the NEWMAC Tournament and, with hard work in practice, we plan on achieving that goal."
For the past decade, Temkin has been heavily involved with the Husky Volleyball Club as the assistant director and coaching director for ages 12-15. He has been involved in player evaluation and team selection and interacted with parents and collegiate coaches to aid in the college recruiting process. Under Temkin's leadership, the program has nearly tripled its participation from 110 to almost 300 athletes.
Temkin is no stranger to the NEWMAC, as he served as an
assistant coach at Mount Holyoke in 2008. He began his
coaching career at Turners Falls High School, totaling 68 wins and
two league championships before moving onto to UMass Amherst where
he was an assistant from 1999-2001.
