January 21, 2014 Worcester Polytechnic Institute Names Laurie Leshin as its 16th President Worcester, MA --- After a six-month intensive search, the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has elected Laurie Leshin, PhD, as the university's 16th president. Over the past 20 years, Leshin, a geochemist and space scientist, established herself as both an academic and administrative leader, having cultivated an impressive career at NASA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Arizona State University (ASU), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). November 8, 2013 | 34 Fall Student-Athletes Garner NEWMAC All-Academic Recognition Boston, MA --- A total of 34 WPI student-athletes across six fall sports have garnered NEWMAC All-Academic status, as announced by the conference office. Women’s Soccer led WPI with eight nods while Men’s Cross Country led their sport with a conference-best six honorees. Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2013 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at his or her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season. >>
November 2, 2013 | Seniors Ganser and Cook Shine for Volleyball in Season Finale Worcester, MA --- Martina Kneifel stuffed the stat sheets with 16 kills, 20 digs and seven aces as visiting Mount Holyoke defeated WPI 3-1 in the 2013 NEWMAC volleyball season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon. MHC took the match by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 15-25, 25-16. Senior Holly Ganser led the WPI offense with eight kills and just two errors in 19 attempts (.316 hitting percentage) while classmate pitched in with three kills and seven digs in her final career match. >>
October 29, 2013 | Volleyball Toppled on the Road Against City Foe Clark Worcester, MA --- Playing in the final home match of her Clark career, senior Rachel Spera handed out 28 assists and led the host Cougars to a decisive 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-15) win over crosstown rival WPI in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening. Maddy Werth paced the Engineer offense with six kills, while Caroline Meyer posted 11 assists and Jenny Wallace registered a match-best 12 digs. WPI will wrap up its 2013 season on Saturday when they play host to league rival Mount Holyoke at 1pm. >>
October 26, 2013 | Volleyball Knocked Off by Western New England and Endicott in Tri-Match Beverly, MA --- The WPI volleyball team went on the road Saturday and dropped a pair of matched to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents. The Crimson and Gray fell to Western New England (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) and to host Endicott (25-12, 25-12, 25-18). The Engineers are now 7-19 on the season, and head to Clark Tuesday for a 7pm NEWMAC match. Against Endicott, WPI was led by middle Holly Gasner who led the team with five kills. Caroline Meyer and Lucy Garvey split time at setter as Meyer led the team with eight assists before Garvey came in to pitch in with five of her own. >>
October 23, 2013 | Hot-Hitting Springfield Upends Volleyball Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College women's volleyball team hit a program-record .662 for the match as it handled visiting WPI in Dana Gymnasium on Wednesday night in NEWMAC play. Set scores for the Pride were 25-6, 25-18, 25-19. For the Engineers, Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) had a team-best six kills, while Sam Bircsak, Maddy Werth, and Kenzie Whalen all had four kills. Caroline Meyer handed out 13 assists as WPI hit .150 for the contest. >>
October 19, 2013 | Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With Worcester State and Framingham State Framingham, MA --- The WPI volleyball team defeated Worcester State 3-2 (26-24, 25-14, 22-25, 26-28, 15-11) before falling to host Framingham State 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-9) in a non-conference tri-match on Saturday at Framingham's Athletic Center. In its opener, the Engineers were led by the trio of freshman Kenzie Whalen, senior Holly Ganser and freshman Maddy Werth. Whalen recorded a team-best 16 kills on 39 attempts, while Ganser chipped in with 14 and Werth added 12. >>
October 17, 2013 | Volleyball Derailed by Smith Despite Strong Play from Veterans Worcester, MA --- Rose Drummond posted a double-double and combined with Kristi Hammond to hit .348 as visiting Smith defeated WPI 3-0 in a NEWMAC volleyball contest on Thursday evening. Senior Holly Ganser paced the WPI hitting attack with nine kills in 21 attempts while classmate Sarah Cook added five kills and a game-high 15 digs. Sophomore Jenny Wallace contributed three kills and an assist in her 2013 season debut and Caroline Meyer led all players with 22 assists on the night. >>
October 8, 2013 | Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Setback at NEWMAC Foe Babson Babson Park, MA --- Sophomore Mary Donahue had a match-high eight kills while classmate Krissy Robertson led all players with 14 assists and five service errors helping Babson College to a straight-set, 25-12, 25-19, 25-9, victory over WPI in NEWMAC women’s volleyball match at Staake Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Senior Holly Gasner and first-year Maddy Werth led WPI with four kills apice. First-year Caroline Meyer had a team-high 10 assists. >>
October 5, 2013 | Volleyball Tripped Up On Final Day of JWU Invitational Providence, RI --- The WPI women’s volleyball team fell to Western Connecticut, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-15), and Regis, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-22), on Saturday as the team competed on the final day of the Johnson & Wales Invitational. Seniors Holly Ganser and Sarah Cook combined for 11 of the Engineers 19 kills as Cook tacked on eight digs in the opener against Western Connecticu >>
October 4, 2013 | Volleyball Foiled Twice on Day One of Johnson & Wales Invitational Providence, RI --- The WPI volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 losses on the opening day of action at the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Crimson and Gray dropped the opener to the host Wildcats by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 before falling in the nightcap to Bridgewater State by counts of 26-24, 25-18, 25-15. Sarah Cook and Maddy Werth each smacked six kills in the opener against JWU while Holly Ganser led all players with 10 against BSU. >>
