Both WPI Cross Country Teams Claim Worcester City Title

Worcester, MA -- Alex White (Washington, MI) lead the WPI Men's Cross Country team to its 13th straight title at the Worcester City Championships. WPI finished the day with 35 points, while Assumption followed with 42, Worcester State with 71, Clark with 91, and Anna Maria with 131. White's time of 26:29 led all runners and teammate Paul Freitas (Walpole, MA) helped to round out the top five with his third place spot (27:32). Daniel Duffy (Haverhill, MA) placed seventh for the Engineers (28:12) while Nick Wirth (Mansfield, MA) (28:22, 11th), Kevin Jillson (East Sandwich, MA) (28:24, 13th), Chris McCann (Haverhillm MA) (28:29, 14th), Isaiah Janzen (Sabetha, KS) (29:03, 16th), Ben Roy (Buxton, ME) (29:07, 18th) and Eugene Douglass (Concord, NH) (29:33, 20th) all finished in the top 20 for WPI.

Megan Murphy (Perkasie, PA) beat the second place runner by 12 seconds to help the WPI Women's Cross Country claim the Worcester City Championship for just the third time in 23 years. Running at WPI's Institute Park, the Engineers finished with just 26 points while Assumption followed with 47, Clark with 61 and Worcester State with 107. Amanda Learned (Hopkinton, MA) (19:42) and Meghan Woods (Hanover, MA) (19:54) rounded out the top five for the Engineers with their third and fourth place finishes respectively. Marissa Gray (Stanley, NY) finished at 20:53 for a seventh place finish while Catie Casey (Plymouth, MA) (21:23, 11th), Jen Keating (Winchester, MA) (21:41, 13th place), Beth Hegarty (Springfield, MA) (22:05, 17th) and Caitlin Wood (Fitchburg, MA) (22:10, 18th) finished in the top 20 for the Crimson and Gray.

Both teams will travel to the Tri-State Invitational at the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday at 10am.
