Both WPI Cross Country Teams Capture WNEC Invitational Titles
Springfield, MA --- Graduate student Alex White (Washington, MI) was the individual champion covering the five-mile course in 27:34.9 seconds as WPI captured the Western New England College Invitational with 35 points on Saturday. It marked the third straight meet WPI has won. Clark was second (65) followed by Worcester State (74). Paul Freitas (Walpole, MA) placed sixth (28:48.9) while Kevin Jillson (East Sandwich, MA) (8th, 29:04.4) and Daniel Duffy (Haverhill, MA) (9th, 29:14.3) rounded out the top ten for the Engineers. Nick Wirth (Mansfield, MA) captured an 11th place finish (29:37.3), Isiah Janzen (Sabetha, KS) finished 14th (30:00.7), Peter Brown (Andover, MA) in 15th (30:04.8), Chris Gabreilson (Westford, MA) in 16th (30:05.8), with Eugene Douglass (Concord, NH) rounding out the top twenty in 17th (30:17.3).
WPI senior Megan Murphy (Perkasie, PA) finished first (20:10.8 seconds for 5,000 meters) and sophomore teammate Meghan Woods (Hanover, MA) was second (20:30.5) to lead the Engineers to their third consecutive team title this season at the Western New England College Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Marissa Gray (Stanley, NY) placed eighth (21:40.3) for WPI who totaled 34 points. Clark was second with 42 points and Western New England finished third with 64 points. Catie Casey (Plymouth, MA) and Jen Keating (Winchester, MA) placed 11th (22:09.3) and 12th (22:23.4) respectively while Beth Hegarty (Springfield, MA) earned a 15th place finish (22:41.0). Caitlin Wood (Fitchburg, MA) rounded out the top 20 for the Engineers, finishing 17th (22:56.7).
In addition to each team winning three straight races, Murphy has won three in a row while White has emerged victorious twice in three meets.
Both cross country teams return to action on October 28th when they compete at the NEWMAC Championships at Mount Holyoke College beginning at 11am.
