The 2011 cross country season will mark the return of Mike Maceiko to Boynton Hill. In January he was officially hired to take over for Brian Savilonis, who announced his retirement after over a quarter century as a head coach for the Engineers.
Maceiko is no stranger to WPI, serving as head track and field
coach from 2005 until 2008 and as a volunteer assistant the past
two seasons. In addition to his head cross country coaching
duties, Maceiko will have additional responsibilities within the
track and field program.
“It's exciting to be back at WPI and I am looking forward to
building off of the current successes of the track and field
team,” said Maceiko. “The student-athletes at WPI are
very dedicated and committed to working hard.”
During his first tenure on Boynton Hill, the Engineers had
numerous NEWMAC champions and All-New England and All-ECAC
student-athletes. A particular area of strength is in middle
distance running where six school records were broken under his
watchful eye. In his final season at the helm, Maceiko had
two student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, including
current senior Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) in the
javelin.
As an student-athlete, Maceiko enjoyed a standout collegiate
career at UMass-Amherst while earning a bachelor's degree in
business administration. A captain of the cross country team
during his junior and senior season, Maceiko earned All-Atlantic 10
honors twice while picking up All-District accolades as a senior.
He was part of the Minutemen's Atlantic 10 champion cross country
squad in 1995.
