Men's Cross Country Finishes 21st at D-III New England Regional
Brunswick, ME --- The WPI men’s cross country program finished 21st of 48 teams on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division III New England Regional hosted by Bowdoin. Williams finished first overall, while Middlebury and the host Polar Bears finished second and third, respectively. The event concludes WPI’s 2011 campaign. Shane Ruddy paced the Engineers with a finish in 123rd, posting a time of 27:07.08, cutting a minute and 47 seconds off his finish from last year. Lucas Smith-Horn was just three spots behind with a finish in 126th place.

Gonzalez Leads Men's Cross Country at NEWMAC Championships
Boston, MA --- Sophomore Dominic Gonzalez turned in a 23rd place finish to pace the WPI Men’s Cross Country to a fifth place showing at Monday’s NEWMAC Championships hosted by Wellesley at Boston’s historic Franklin Park. Gonzalez navigated the course in a time of 27:21 as he posed the best WPI time for the fourth time this season. Andrew Zayac and Lucas Smith-Horn finished back-to-back in 26th (27:37) and 27th (27:40) place respectively.

Babeu Paces Women's Cross Country at NEWMAC Championships
Boston, MA --- Amy Babeu led the WPI charge with a 25th place showing as the Engineers finished eighth at the NEWMAC Women’s Cross Country Championships on Monday at Boston’s venerable Franklin Park. Babeu turned in a time of 20:18, 24 seconds better than her time on the course earlier this month at the All-New England championships. That was the theme of the day for the Crimson and Gray as six place winners improved upon their October 8th time on the same course.

NEWMAC Cross Country Championship Postponed Until Monday
Wellesley, MA --- The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced today the postponement of its men’s and women’s cross country championship until Monday, October 31. The meet, originally scheduled for Sunday, will still be held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. and will begin with the men’s race at 3pm. followed by the women at 4pm. Additionally, WPI's Men's Soccer game at Coast Guard on Saturday has been shifted to a 11:30am start time.

WPI Weekly Athletics Update #7
Men's Cross Country's Shane Ruddy and Women's Crew's Varsity Eight have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Ruddy finished fourth at the Western New England Invitational to lead WPI to its second victory this Fall. The Varsity Eight posted a time of 14:47.322 at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta. Only 2011 NCAA participants Bates and Wellesley finished ahead of the Engineers.

Men's Cross Country Triumphs at Western New England
Springfield, MA --- The Engineers of the WPI men's cross country team came in first at the Western New England Invitational on Saturday, running past 15 other programs from throughout the region. WPI had three runners in the top seven, and seven runners among the top twenty. Shane Ruddy led the charge for the Crimson and Gray, coming in fourth overall with a time of 27:13.75. Lucas Smith-Horn was next with a sixth place finish and a time 27:17.81. Right behind him in seventh was Dominic Gonzalez at 27:19.75.

Hewey and Women's Cross Country Both Finish Second at Western New England
Springfield, MA ---WPI came in second at the Western New England Invitational for women's cross country on Saturday, placing second in a field of 19 programs. Three of the top seven finishers were from WPI, led by Vicky Hewey who came in second overall with a time of 19:18.75. Amy Babeu was sixth with a time of 20:13.44. Right behind her was Hannah McCallum in seventh at 20:15.62.

Women's Cross Places 35th at All-New England All-Divisions Meet
Boston, MA --- WPI Women's Cross Country came in 35th out of 39 scoring teams at the All-New England (All-Divisions) Meet, held Saturday at Boston's Franklin Park. The Engineers were paced by Amy Babeu, who came in 184th with a time of 20:42. Boston College took home the team title while Boston University's Katie Matthews won the meet with a time of 17:18. Women's Cross Country is back on the course on Saturday at the Western New England Invitational in Springfield. First gun is scheduled for 10:30am.

Gonzalez, Ruddy Lead Cross Country at All-New England
WPI's men's cross country team came in 38th at the All-New England Meet on Saturday, led by Dominic Gonzalez (Lowell, MA), who finished with a time of 27:28 in 176th place. Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) was just three seconds behind him, finishing with a 27:31 in 180th place. They were followed by Lucas Smith-Horn (Ellington, CT - 209th/28:01), Rob Hollinger (Averill Park, NY - 218th/28:13), Andrew Zayac (Plymouth, MA - 234th/28:41), Josh Brodin (Mansfield, MA - 249th/29:08) and Scott Burger (Huntington Station, NY - 250th/29:10).

Brian Savilonis Award Unveiled at Worcester City Cross Country Meet
Worcester, MA --- A new award named after recently-retired WPI Cross Country coach Brian Savilonis was unveiled last weekend at the Worcester City Cross Country Meet. The Brian Savilonis Award to the top senior in each race was given to men’s winner Chris Kibler of Fitchburg State and women’s fifth place Isabel Burgess of Clark. The brainchild of new WPI head coach Mike Maceiko, the award honors a man who had been the head coach of the women's program since its inception in 1985.

Hewey Selected NEWMAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Babson Park, MA --- WPI junior Vicky Hewey was been named NEWMAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week. Hewey joins men’s winner Ryan O’Connell of Springfield in receiving weekly recognition by NEWMAC media chief Greg McKeever. Hewey captured her third straight Worcester City meet title by navigating a sloppy course at Moore State Park in Paxton in a time of 20:32. The junior has been WPI’s top finisher in all three races this season and helped the Engineers win their fourth straight Worcester City crown.
