April 12, 2014 | Softball Scores Early To Grab Nightcap From NEWMAC Rival Wellesley Wellesley, MA --- Nicole McDonough and Kristin Gallagher combined to rap out seven hits as the WPI softball team split a NEWMAC doubleheader against host Wellesley on Saturday afternoon. The host Blue shutout the Engineers in game one by a 4-0 score, while WPI rebounded in game two with a 7-2 victory. WPI jumped in front early in game one, scoring a run in the first thanks to a leadoff double from McDonough and an RBI triple by Gallagher and four more runs in the third inning, with three of those runs coming on back-to-back doubles by Ali Larue and Lindsay Gurska. >>
April 12, 2014 | Tevenan and Pellegrini Set New School Standards as Women's Track and Field Takes Tri-Meet New London, CT – Liz Pellegrini and Julie Tevenan both set school records as WPI women’s track and field cruised to a NEWMAC tri-meet victory over Coast Guard and Springfield. The Engineers racked up 161 points to ease past the host Bears (115) and visiting Pride (103). Tevenan broke her own school record in the 1,500-meter (4:44.01), while Pellegrini smashed the school mark in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.66), also wining the 100-meter hurdles (15.82) >>
April 12, 2014 | Mercier Sets 100 Record as Men's Track and Field Scores Tri-Meet Victory New London, CT --- The WPI men’s track and field team claimed six victories and 10 second-place finished to pull ahead for the tri-meet victory Saturday at Coast Guard, amassing 168 points to edge the host Bears (141.50) and Springfield College (88.50). Jacob Mercier highlighted the day for the Crimson and Gray, setting the school record in the 100-meter dash with a blazing first-place time of 10.89 seconds. He finished just ahead of teammate Hugh Whelan (2nd place, 10.97) as the Engineers posted four of the top five finishers. >>
April 12, 2014 | Bullpen Strong Again as Baseball Splits Wild Road Twinbill at Coast Guard New London, CT --- WPI faced big early inning deficits twice Saturday in a NEWMAC doubleheader at Coast Guard, but rallied in both contests and took game one 8-7 before seeing the hosts rally themselves for two in the bottom of the ninth before winning on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th in the night cap to salvage a split.The Engineers rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win the opener and trailed in game two 5-0. WPI is now 15-11 overall and 8-5 in conference play while the Bears are 11-16 overall and 6-7 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard sits in the fifth and final NEWMAC tournament spot with four games to play in the regular season. >>
April 12, 2014 | Women's Rowing Kicks off Spring Season by Competing in the Donahue Cup Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's rowing program made its 2013 spring debut in Donahue Cup on Saturday, competing against Williams, MIT, Franklin & Marshall and Connecticut College on Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight of made up of Corre Steele, Anisa Swei, Maggie Freed, Brooke Cotta, Julie Waddle, Elisabeth Boulanger, Liz Audet, Sandra Garcia-Fine and coxswain Jess Preshaw had a great showing, placing second in a time of 6:46.89. The Engineers were just six seconds off of defending national champion Williams. >>
April 12, 2014 | Men's Rowing Makes 2014 Spring Debut on Lake Quisigamond Worcester, MA --- WPI men's rowing opened the 2013 spring season by competing for the Donahue Cup on Saturday, squaring off with Williams, MIT, Connecticut College and Franklin & Marshall on Lake Quisigamond. The varsity eight comprised of John Morrisey, Matt Foley, Kendell Cotton, Alex Baret, Gary Jackson, Joe Sperry, Keegan Cole, Nick Van Sciver, and coxswain Mitra Marvasti-Sitterly finished third behind Williams and MIT in a time of 6:03.44. >>
April 11, 2014 | Softball Remains Perfect on Rooftop Field with Sweep of Smith Worcester, MA --- The WPI softball team remained undefeated on its new Rooftop Field on Friday afternoon, sweeping Smith in a key NEWMAC doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 15-2. Clare Doolin earned the victory in the circle in both games while freshman Kristin Gallagher blasted a grand slam for her first career home and Nicole McDonough went 4-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap as the Engineers move their record to 18-7 overall and 7-4 in NEWMAC action >>
April 11, 2014 | Greene and Miraglia Shine as Baseball Drops Opener to Coast Guard Worcester, MA --- WPI baseball staged a four-run rally in the seventh inning, but couldn’t come all they way back in a 7-4 home loss against NEWMAC foe Coast Guard. The Bears (10-15, 5-6) got hot early, putting up three runs in the first and holding on the rest of the way to send freshman Colton Cannon to his third win. WPI (14-10, 7-4 NEWMAC) will look to get back on top in the three-game weekend series when the two squads meet again Saturday down in New London, CT in a doubleheader starting at noon.WPI reliever Sam Miraglia entered in the fourth inning down 5-0, and pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing just two unearned runs to keep the hosts in it. >>
April 9, 2014 | Doolin, Late Heroics Push Softball to Home Sweep of Worcester State Worcester, MA --- WPI rallied from two-run deficits in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to defeat visiting Worcester State 6-5 in the nightcap to complete a sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Engineers, who took the opener 5-0, remain undefeated on its new Rooftop Field (7-0) and is 16-7 overall while Worcester State dips to 5-12 on the season. Clare Doolin pitched up her second win of the day, by not allowing an earned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief. >>
April 9, 2014 | Defense Dooms Baseball in Loss at Crosstown Rival Worcester State Worcester, MA --- Junior Joe Perlak tossed six strong innings to earn his fourth victory over the season to help lead Worcester State to a 7-5 triumph over WPI in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at the Lyons Baseball Diamond.The Engineers (14-9) staked the early 2-0 edge on the back of a two-run homer by sophomore Sean Greene. The blast was his NEWMAC-best third of the campaign. WPI starts a three-game set with Coast Guard beginning with a 3:30 single game against the Bears on Friday. >>
