Howard Collects 100th, D'Agostino First Career Hit as Baseball Ends 2018 With Win at Becker

Matt Howard

Leicester, MA --- Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, MA) and Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) combined for six hits as WPI baseball wrapped up its 2018 campaign with a 14-12 non-conference victory at Becker on Thursday afternoon.  The Engineers saw their season end with a 13-22 mark while Becker, who can still qualify for NECC Tournament after a three-game weekend series with Dean, is now 9-23.

The game saw some WPI history as senior starting pitcher Steven D'Agostino (Worcester, MA) notched his first career hit in the second inning and Matt Howard (Worcester, MA) delivered his 100th career hit with a double in the eighth.

Becker had some history of its own, as senior outfielder Chris Testa (Providence, RI) became the Hawks all-time hits leader in the bottom of the eighth inning when he singled to left-center field for the 180th hit of his career.  Testa had earlier tied the record of 179 set by Todd Tompkins (Class of 2013) with a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth. Testa finished the day going two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored.

Crimson and Gray catcher Austin Lindner (W. Windsor, NJ) drove in three runs off two hits, while Tropeano had three hits and two runs scored. Evan Lacroix (Methuen, MA), Gallagher and Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD) each drove in two runs apiece while junior Josh Herlands (Glastonbury, CT) blasted solo home run.

WPI scored the game's first three runs and never trailed on the day.  Patterson put WPI ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and Lacroix notched a two-run single an inning later.   The Engineers extended its advantage to 6-1 in the fifth following a run-scoring single from Patterson, who came around to score on an error, and Herlands' towering shot to left.

Gallagher accounted for the Engineers next two runs with an run-producing single in the sixth inning and a RBI triple to kick off a six-run eighth that also featured Howard's 100th career hit on a double that scored a run, and a Austin Lindner two-run single.  Linder closed out the WPI scoring with a RBI single in the ninth.

Doug Rives (Bethany, CT) was credited with the win after allowing just one earned run in four innings of release.  The junior evened his record at 2-2.  Dominic Fusco (North Haven, CT) ended a ninth-inning Becker threat by getting the final out for his first career save.
