Springfield, MA --- Friday night's series opener against Springfield resulted in a seven inning affair as the Pride took down the WPI baseball team 13-1. Springfield put together 14 hits on the day, while holding the Engineers to just two, as a six-run fourth inning solidified the Pride's win.
Andrew Brooks (Millis, MA) got things going for WPI (11-12, 1-6 NEWMAC) in the top of the first with a single up the middle, but Springfield (12-14, 4-3) wouldn't allow another WPI hit until the fourth inning of action.
Brooks finished the day 1-for-3 while Danny Johnson (Mendon, MA) stepped in to pinch hit for Dylan Connors (Westboro, MA) in the fourth inning and ripped a solo shot to left field to get the Engineers on the board.
Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, MA) was a perfect 3-for-3 for Springfield on the day finishing with five RBIs while five other batters finished with two hits. Cadin Maynard (Waterford, CT) was a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Everett Wonson (York, ME) got the start on the bump pitching two complete innings, allowing six runs on six hits and picking up the loss. Scott West (Durham, NC) and Eric DePiero (Beverly, MA) combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Crimson and Gray. Springfield starting pitcher Colby Welch (Brandon, FL) picked up his first win of the year pitching six innings and allowing the two hits and a run.
Springfield put two runs on the board in the first, four in the second, one in the third and sixth in the fourth en route to the run-rule victory. The Engineers' lone run came in the fourth inning of action on Johnson's solo shot to erase the shutout.
WPI and Springfield are back in action with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at Noon at Assumption.
