Westwood, MA --- WPI football juniors Hunter Carey (South Hadley, MA) and Frankie Polito (Shrewsbury, MA) were selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Football Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week for the week ending on October 30th.
Carey set the tone for the Engineers' offense with 163 total yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon, marking the only offensive scores for WPI in the 20-15 victory over Norwich on Saturday. The junior running back compiled 112 yards on the ground on 15 carries including a 28-yard touchdown gallop. Carey added a pair of catches for 51 yards along with a 40-yard score.
On the other side of the ball, Polito amassed a career-best 14 tackles, including 11 solo stops, to highlight the Crimson and Gray's defensive presence in the 20-15 win against the visiting Cadets at H.Carr Field. The junior linebacker took control in the second half with a pass breakup and tackle-for-loss in the second half.
Joining Carey and Polito in this week's NEWMAC Football honors is Springfield's senior kicker Christian Hutra. The last duo of Crimson and Gray football squad members to receive weekly conference accolades were Dante Coccagnia (E. Syracuse, NY) and Brock Dubey (Dudley, MA) on September 6th following a 58-21 triumph over Worcester State.
The Boyton Hillers will return to action on Saturday as they travel to New London, Connecticut for a NEWMAC contest against Coast Guard slated for a 12pm kickoff.
