WPI 1, Fitchburg State 0
Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Celena Dopart (Washington, DC) registered the only goal of the game and senior Allie Griffin ( Billerica, MA) notched a shutout as WPI blanked visiting Fitchburg State 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action Thursday afternoon.
Dopart's goal came after she collected a long pass from Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA). The sophomore's tally came in the 45th minute and was the fourth of her career.
The game was hard fought from both sides with Griffin collecting eight saves for the Engineers and Abbie Brown (Westwood, MA) registering seven stops for the Falcons. The shutout highlighted Griffin's first collegiate start.
Fitchburg State was the aggressor as they outshot WPI 12-9 and enjoyed a 15-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Crimson and Gray got a lift from tri-captain Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME), who collected a defensive save in the third minute.
Both teams return to action on Saturday WPI will host Lasell at 3pm while Fitchburg State will host Thomas at noon.
