Field Hockey Defeats Smith in Final Home Game for Seniors

Worcester, MA ---  Senior Jackie McDonough (Winchester, MA) highlighted Senior Night by registering a goal and an assist to lift host WPI to a 5-1 victory over Smith in NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday evening.  With the result, WPI ups its record to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Smith slips to 3-10 on the season and 0-6 in NEWMAC action.    

Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) opened the scoring for WPI in the 11th minute when  she tucked home a rebound for her second goal of the year.  Ten minutes later, Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) knocked home a Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) rocket that hit off the post to put the Engineers up 2-0 at the half.

WPI extended its lead to 3-0 when Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) took a pass from McDonough and knocked it past the Smith goalie in the 43rd minute.  McDonough then got into the scoring act when her laser tipped of a defender and into the net for her third goal of the season and seventh of her career.  Meghan Farrell (Phillipston, MA) closed out the  WPI scoring in the 63rd minute when she put away a rebound for her first career marker.

Smith dented the scoring column in the 68th minute when Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) collected her own rebound and deposited the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.  Capute had a strong night for the Pioneers, tallying four of the Pioneers nine shots.

Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA) and Elizabeth Ray (Simsbury, CT) split halves in goal for WPI.  Griffin made one save while Ray recorded three stops.  Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) played well for the Pioneers, turning away nine shots on the night.

The contest marked the final regular season home game for seniors McDonough, Griffin, Ray, Johnson, who had her team-best seventh defensive save, and Meganne Chiasson (North Andover, MA), as well as manager, Amanda Martori (Haverhill, MA).

Both teams return to action on Saturday with NEWMAC contests at 1pm.  WPI heads to Springfield to take on the Pride at 1pm while Smith entertains Wheaton.
