Field Hockey Blanked by Union in First Loss of 2010

Schenectady, NY --- Four different Union players scored as the field hockey team downed WPI on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.  With the win, Union improves to 1-1 on the season.  WPI fell for the first time of the season to 3-1.

Union used balanced scoring throughout the game to defeat the Engineers, tallying two goals in each half. The Dutchwomen made its presence known early on the when senior Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) scored off a Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) pass just over two minutes into the game.

At 23:17 Union notched another goal when Isabel Zellweger (Rye, NY) beat a few defender to the right side of the goal and sent a shot past the WPI net-minder Aly Caceres (Fall River, MA).

Willey kept the scoring going early in the second half with a goal from a Caroline Moran (Unionville, PA) pass at 40:26. With under ten minutes to play the Dutchwomen scored for the final time when Ali Flake (Vineyard Haven, MA) fed a pass to Kristin O'Connor (Wethersfield, CT) for a goal.
Between the posts Sarah Rios (Queensbury, NY) earned a shutout and win, stopping five WPI shots. WPI's Caceres had three saves in the game.
Union will return to action Wednesday at 5pm when it hosts Utica at Frank Bailey Field.  WPI begins a five game homestand Tuesday against Western New England at 4:30pm.
