Worcester, MA --- Nichols junior goalkeeper Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth. MA) made three saves and the Bison tallied a goal early and late in the contest en route to a 2-0 shutout of host WPI on Tuesday night in non-conference field hockey action. With the win, Nichols improves to 7-2 while WPI drops to 4-5 on the season.
Nichols opened the scoring 4:52 into the game when sophomore Emily Widdison (Greenfield, MA) fed forward Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, MA) in front of the net to setup the junior's team-best eighth goal of the season.
WPI had two quality shots within five seconds in the waning moments before halftime. Sophomore Meghan Farrell (Phillipston, MA) saw her shot blocked by a Bison defender while classmate Becca Sharpe's (Concord, NH) bid was repelled by Forand.
The score remained 1-0 until Nichols sophomore forward Barbara Roy (Springfield, MA) tapped the ball into the net after a dish from senior midfielder Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, NH) with just 41 seconds left in the contest. The Engineers' only shot on goal of the half came in the 44th minute off a blast from Celena Dopart (Washington, DC) in which Forand made the stop.
Forand minded the net for the entire 70 minutes for the Bison, registering her first shutout of the season. Sophomore Aly Caceres (Fall River, MA) played the first half for the Engineers and stopped three shots while freshman Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) did not have to make a save in her 35 minutes in goal during the second stanza. Junior midfielder Paige Hanson (East Hartford, CT) aided the Crimson and Gray with a defensive save in the 60th minute.
For the game, Nichols enjoyed a slight edge 11-8 in shots while taking six of the game's 10 penalty corners.
Both teams return to action on Saturday with conference road tilts. WPI ventures to Babson for a 1pm NEWMAC contest while Nichols heads to Springfield at 6pm to take on Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference affair.
