Worcester, MA --- Rookie Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) registered a first half hat trick and six other players notched goals as WPI defeated visiting Becker 9-1 in a non-conference field hockey game on Thursday evening. Mazzola put WPI on the scoreboard just 56 seconds into the contest off an assist by Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) and added an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. WPI put the game out of reach with a flurry of three tallies in the final 10 minutes before intermission with Mazzola's third goal quickly following markers by Katie Correia (Merrimack, NH) and Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA).
The Engineer offense continued to shine in the second half as Megan Read (Wrentham, MA), Stephanie Symecko (Cedar Knolls, NJ), Grace Davis (Sandwich, MA) and Richardson all found the back of the net. Richardson ended the night with a pair of assists while Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA), Barboza, Becca Sharpe (Concord, NH), Correia, Symecko, Shannon Rice (Bath, ME) and Nicole Holmes (Plymouth, MA) were all credited with helpers.
Becker got on the board at 46:56 when Katherine Dimascio (Braintree, MA) rifled a shot off a penalty corner feed from by Brittany Cormier (Danbury, MA) for her third marker of the season.
Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) and Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) each played a half in between the pipes for the Engineers. Dufresne recorded a stop in the opening period while Phuishys was not called up to make a save in the second stanza. Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, NY) was strong in net for the Hawks, recording 17 saves.
