Worcester, MA --- Stephanie Symecko (Cedar Knolls, NJ) and Kate Roosa (Cottekill, NY) each netted second half goals to propel host WPI to a 2-0 field hockey victory over Wheaton in the NEWMAC opener for both squads. The Engineers, winners of two straight, are now 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the visiting Lyons are 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.
After over 50 minutes of scoreless play, the hosts broke the goal-less drought when Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) dribble into the circle from the right side and crossed it to Grace Davis (Sandwich, MA). The freshman rocketed a shot to the far post and had it redirected by Symecko for her fourth goal of the season at 52:12.
WPI continued to attack and were rewarded with a penalty stroke at 60:34 for a Wheaton infraction near the goal mouth at 60:34. Roosa calmly buried the stroke into the left corner for her first tally of the year and second of her career.
Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) amassed four saves on the day en route to her first shutout of 2012 and fifth of her career. The Lyons got an outstanding performance in between the pipes from Ellie Massengill (Amherst, MA). The junior registered a career-best 23 stops.
WPI enjoyed a 32-11 edge in shots and took nine of the game's 12 penalty corners. Mazzola and Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) combined to take 15 shots for the Engineers while Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, MA) and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, MA) notched four and three shots respectively for the visiting Lyons.
WPI is back in action Tuesday, hosting city rival Worcester State at 7pm. Wheaton is off until next Saturday when it hosts Wellesley at Faxon Field in Rehoboth at 1pm.
