Cambridge, MA --- In only its third NEWMAC game of the season, MIT field hockey defeated WPI, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers of MIT raised their record to 9-2 for the season, while the Engineers of WPI dipped to 4-6.
MIT played strongly right from the beginning of the game, shooting at goalkeeper Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) eight times in the first 10 minutes, but only one of them needed to be saved. In the 11th minute, however, junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, NJ) was able to sneak the ball past Dufresne and into the far right of the cage off a pass from Barker. Just over 20 minutes later, senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, IL) increased MIT's lead when she scored the second goal of the day with the help of fellow senior Michelle Dion (Lunenberg, MA) and with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
In the first 35 minutes, MIT outshot WPI 20-1. Dufresne had to make four saves in the first half, while sophomore goalie Jenna Klein (Parma, OH) only had to save one ball.
MIT started the second half the same way they had played the first, making five shots on goal in the first five minutes. The fifth was a pass from sophomore Diane Kim (Acton, MA) to Barker, who scored MIT's third goal of the day. This goal was her eighth of the season and the 55th in her four years at MIT, places her top of the all-time career goals list.
In the second half, MIT, again, outshot WPI, 13-3, making the total shots for the game 33-4. Dufresne had two more saves in the last 35 minutes and Klein only had to make one save.
Madison Shugrue (Worcester, MA) added her 10th defensive save for WPI.
MIT's Engineers will return to action when they face yet another NEWMAC rival, Wellesley, on Tuesday, Oct. 2. WPI's Engineers will also face a NEWMAC foe when they host Mount Holyoke that same day.
