The #14 Wellesley College field hockey team ran its record to 12-1, recording an 8-0 victory over visiting WPI in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Blue improve 5-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers dip to 5-7, 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Wellesley used a dominant effort on both sides of the field to earn its ninth straight victory. The Blue offense piled on eight goals on 21 shots, while holding WPI to just one shot in the contest
The hosts scored five times in the first half, all coming on corner opportunities. Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, CT) got the offense going with a seventh-minute deflection off a hard shot from Meghan Peterson (Glastonbury, CT). Anissa Sridhar (Idlerton, Ontario) then pushed the lead to 2-0, scoring in the ninth minute, deflecting another Meghan Peterson attempt.
Wellesley's scoring run quieted until the last 11 minutes of the half, when the Blue piled on three goals to run the score to 5-0. Nathalie Gruet (Acton,MA) got in on the scoring action in the 25th-minute, deflecting a Nikki Sharkin (Summit, NJ) shot into the right side of the cage. In the 27th minute, Hannah Flesch (Rockville, MD) deflected a Meghan Peterson ball to make it 4-0, while Sharkin scored in the 34th minute on a corner insertion from Courtney Peterson to make it 5-0 at the break.
In the second half, Wellesley's offense pushed in three more goals, while not allowing a WPI shot, making it an 8-0 final. Flesch scored twice more to complete her hat trick, both coming from Courtney Peterson assists. Sridhar added her second goal of the contest, this one on an assist from Alex Azzi (Rye, NH), to complete the Blue attack.
WPI was held to just one attempt at the goal, a first-half shot from Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, MD) that went wide.
Wellesley's Brit Mscisz and Lucy Hurlock each played one scoreless half for the Blue, without needing to make a save. For WPI, Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) played the first 35 minutes, making four saves, while Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) came on in the second and stopped five shots.
Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting #5 Tufts University at 4:00pm. WPI next plays on Saturday, traveling to Elms for a 2:00pm clash.
