Puishys and Mazzucco Guide Field Hockey to Thrilling Win in NEWMAC Opener

Worcester, MA --- Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, CT) scored on a breakaway late in the second overtime to provide host WPI a dramatic 2-1 victory over Smith in the NEWMAC conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, WPI is now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while Smith dips to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.

Mazzucco took an outlet pass from Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) around midfield and dribbled unopposed before blasting a shot above the sprawling Smith netminder at 97:50.  The marker was the sophomore's third of the season - all game-winners - and seventh of her career.

Mazzucco heroics capped a wildly-entertaining overtime that featured nine penalty corners and outstanding goalkeeping by WPI's Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) and Smith's Nora Demick (Watertown, MA).  Phishys recorded six of her nine stops after regulation while Demick made two of her five saves in extra time.  The visitors, who were outshot 10-4 by WPI in the second half, totaled 10 of the combined 17 shots in the two overtime period.

Rebecca Meagher (Acton, MA) got Smith on the board in the sixth minute when she knocked home a feed from Kat Estes (Falmouth, MA) following a penalty corner at 5:27.  After a Pioneer shot, a WPI timeout and a Smith corner, WPI leveled the game when Mazzola buried a pass from Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) at 12:49 for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.  The opening stanza was evenly matched with both teams tallying five shots, registering one save and the visitors attempting five of the eight corners.

WPI is off until next Saturday when it heads to Cambridge for a noon contest at MIT while Smith is back at it Tuesday, hosting nationally-ranked Williams at 7pm.
