Richardson and Puishys Guide Field Hockey to Important NEWMAC Road Win at Clark

Libbi Richardson

Worcester, MA --- Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) banged home the game's long goal and visiting WPI earned a 1-0 win over Worcester city rival Clark University on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action at the Granger Turf Field.

The win for the Engineers ends their two-game losing streak and sends their record to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in league games. Clark, meanwhile, has dropped back-to-back conference games to slip to 6-5.

Each team had excellent scoring chances – both had goals disallowed – in the opening stanza for scoring from outside the circle.

Richardson finally broke the scoreless tie when she scored off of a penalty corner loose ball scramble at 49:53.

Clark had a great chance to even the score in the 64th minute when Kiah Murphy (Westport, MA) fired a shot from in close off of a penalty corner but WPI netminder Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) was up to the task, turning aside the equalizing attempt.

The Cougars held a slight advantage in shots (8-7) and in penalty corners (8-5) but in the end it was Puishys who was the difference, making seven saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

WPI returns to action on Thursday when they kick off a five game home stand with area rival Nichols. The Scarlet and White, meanwhile will look to return to the win column on Saturday with a conference matchup with MIT.
