Barboza's Helpers Power Field Hockey Past Nichols

Mary Lee-Barboza

Worcester, MA --- Senior Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA) notched a pair of second half assists to propel WPI past visiting Nichols 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey contest Thursday afternoon.

The Engineers, winners of two straight, are now 8-3 on the season while Nichols, who has dropped eight in a row, falls to 2-10 overall.

With the game tied 1-1 at intermission, the Crimson and Gray tallied a pair of markers in the opening 7:25 of the second stanza to nab the victory.  Barboza got the rally started when she calmly drilled a pass perpendicular to the goal line to classmate Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) who nailed a one-timer from three feet out for her second game-winner in as many contests and 17th career goal at 37:26.

Barboza set up WPI's insurance goal with a penalty corner insertion to Abby Cervelloni (Charlottesville, VA).  The junior made a perfect stick stop to set up a blast from sophomore Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT), who deposited her first career goal at 42:25.

WPI opened the scoring at 14:54 when sophomore Allie Buckley (Worcester, MA) received a quick pass from junior Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, CT) ,who found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.  Nichols turned the tide during the second part of the first half.  After being outshot 8-1 in the opening 18 minutes, the Bison then took five of the next six shots and attempted five corners and were rewarded with a goal at 31:41 when junior Meghan Dombkowski (Sagaponack, NY) fed senior Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidre, NY), who ripped home a shot from the top of the arc for her second tally of the year.

Junior Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) made three saves in net for the Engineers en route to picking up her eighth win of the fall.  Molly Melanson (Simsbury, CT) was outstanding in goal for the Bison in the first half.  The senior made eight stops while sophomore Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, ME) registered a pair of saves in 27:35 of relief in the second half.

WPI enjoyed a 19-10 edge in shots for the game and a narrow 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.  Richardson and Shevchuk combined for nine shots for the hosts while senior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, MA) paced Nichols with four shots.

Both teams return to conference play with home contests on Saturday.  WPI entertains Wellesley at 5pm as part of Homecoming Weekend while Nichols plays host to the University of New England.
