Leicester, MA --- WPI field hockey received goals from five different players in a 5-0 shutout of host Becker on Tuesday afternoon. The victory improves the Engineers record to 11-5, while the Hawks sink to 4-12.
The Engineers got on the board 4:53 into the game when Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) fed a pass from the right of the Hawks net to Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA), who promptly ripped a shot into the back of the Hawks net.
WPI had a golden opportunity to score their second goal in the 13th minute when Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, MD) blasted a shot from the top of the circle, but Becker defender Amy Giguere (Colrain, MA) made a defensive save to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) gave WPI a 2-0 lead in with 15:47 remaining in the first half when drilled a slap shot past Becker goalie Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, NY) from the top of the circle.
WPI tallied their third goal of the first half when Richardson backhanded a shot past the left leg pad of Gallo on a pass from Amanda Richards (Wilmington, MA).
The Engineers increased their lead to 4-0 when Richards gathered a loose ball in front of the Hawks net, lifting it past Gallo for her first collegiate goal. Freshman Sabrina Guzzi (Suffield, CT) also tallied her first collegiate goal with 5:56 remaining in regulation when she snuck a shot inside the right post.
Gabrielle Gallo made 25 stops in net for the Hawks, while Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) made two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams will wrap up their regular season schedules on Saturday, November 1. Becker will host Wheelock College at 11:00 a.m., while WPI travels to NEWMAC rival Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
