Second Half Surge Lifts Field Hockey by Nichols 5-1

Caroline Mazzola

Dudley, MA --- WPI overcame an early 1-0 deficit to registered five straight goals to defeat host Nichols in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday morning. The Engineers have won the last three meetings between these two Worcester area schools and now lead the all-time series 26-14.

With victory, the WPI improves to 4-8 on the season while the Bison slip to 1-13.

Nichols junior Brooke Marion (South Hadley, MA) tallied her second goal in as many games to give the Bison a 1-0 lead midway through the opening half when she knocked home a rebound high into the net.  From that point forward it was all WPI, who outshot the hosts 17-3 in the first half and evened the score with just 1:03 before intermission when Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) took a feed from Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, MA) shot inside right post from slot.

Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) netted what proved to be the game-winner early in the second half as she knocked a pass from Allie Buckley (Worcester, MA) just 2:57 into the second stanza.

The Engineers put the game out of hand with three markers in a 2:43 midway through the half.

Grace Davis (Sandwich, MA) netted an unassisted goal to start the spurt while Mazzola registered her second of the game and Mazzucco finished a pass from Buckley to close the run.

Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) made six saves in net for the Crimson and Gray en route to her 19th career victory. Ariana Beauregard (Coventry, RI) got the start in goal and turned aside nine shots for the Bison while Katherine Cotton played the final 12:43 in goal and made three saves.  Jacqueline O'Connor (Palmer, MA) was credited with a pair of defensive saves for Nichols while Marion also chipped in with one.

For the game, WPI help a 37-8 bulge in shots and a slim 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday with conference affairs.  WPI heads to Mount Holyoke at 7pm while Nichols entertains Western New England at 4pm.
