Field Hockey Scores Three Early Goals to End Skid Versus Springfield

WORCESTER – WPI senior Sabrina Guzzi (Suffield, CT), freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) and sophomore Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) scored within the first 18:31 in a 3-2 NEWMAC field hockey victory over Springfield Saturday in Alumni Stadium.

The Engineers up their record to 6-2 and 1-1 while the Pride are now 5-4 and 0-2. It is the program's first win versus Springfield since a 1-0 home triumph on September 28, 1999 and 11th-year head coach Lisa Moreau's first versus her alma mater in 14 tries.

The game was part of a tripleheader honoring the football, field hockey and men's soccer teams that made the 1992 NCAA tournament.

Guzzi knocked home a rebound at 3:16 and Hess buried a feed from senior Amanda Richards (Wilmington, MA) at 7:11. Sullivan made it 3-0 with a bid following a block at 18:31.

Springfield snapped the shutout at 33:39 when senior Maggie Kennedy (Clay, NY) deposited a pass from senior Dani Sweet (Charlton, MA). The Pride pulled within one at 69:22 as sophomore Belle Copponi (Dover, MA) found the bottom right corner with an assist by classmate Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, MA). The guests had another chance thanks to a penalty corner with time expired only to have a foul called, ending the game.

Junior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) halted nine shots and senior Abby King (Fairfield, ME) contributed with a defensive stop. Junior Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, NY) stopped 13 shots for the Pride.

Both teams are on the road Tuesday as WPI is at Clark at 6pm and Springfield is at Mount Holyoke at 7pm.
