Mushrall, O'Sullivan Crucial in Field Hockey Double OT Triumph at Wheaton

Hannah Larochelle

Norton, MA --- Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) scored 1:12 into the second overtime to push WPI past host Wheaton 2-1 in NEWMAC Field Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

O'Sullivan scored following a penalty corner with help from Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) to send the Engineers (8-2, 3-1) home with a victory. Hynes evened the match courtesy of a corner with no time left in the first half with aid from Amanda Richards (Wilmington, MA). Hannah Larochelle (New Boston, NH) went coast-to-coast to bring the ball into the circle and drew the corner just prior to the whistle.

The second half and first overtime period were scoreless for both teams, as WPI edged the Lyons narrowly in shots for that timeframe, 12-11. Carly Cidado (Easton, MA) was able to get the ball past Riley Thompson (Fairfield, CT) at 50:10, but Kenzie Stueve (arlington, MA) said no with a defensive save to keep the game knotted at 1-1. Kelsey Buckley (Guilford, NH) had a chance to put the game away with a penalty stroke at 69:42, but Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) came up huge for WPI with an amazing diving stick save.

The Lyons kept the game alive once more in the first overtime period, with Hailey Kohler (Flemington, NJ) coming up with a defensive save after an O'Sullivan shot.

Thompson stopped 13 WPI shots in all 86:17 minutes of the contest while Mushrall picks up her eight win of the season after making a season-best 12 saves.

WPI had the 22-16 bulge in shots and each team was awarded 14 penalty corners.

The Engineers are off until Saturday for final exams and will resume their schedule with the first of three at home beginning with MIT at 2:30pm. Wheaton heads to Wesleyan for a 6pm start on Tuesday.
