Oh Sullivan: Field Hockey Runs Past Wheaton in Friday Night NEWMAC Matchup

WORCESTER – Sophomore Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) scored twice in the first half and assisted on one of junior Bridget Sullivan's (Wilmington, MA) two second half goals as WPI bested Wheaton, 6-1, in a Friday evening NEWMAC field hockey contest inside Alumni Stadium.

The Engineers up their record to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play as the Lyons even out at 5-5 and are 1-3 in league games.

O'Sullivan knocked home her own rebound at 3:07 and later deposited another second chance at 30:06. Sullivan's first goal was off a pass from sophomore Emma Bennett (Hampstead, NH) at 37:11. She then teamed with O'Sullivan for the 5-0 advantage at 40:45.

Freshman Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA) needed only 55 seconds in the second half to put the hosts up 3-0. With 11:49 left in the contest, junior Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) found the back of the cage directly off a penalty corner inserted by sophomore Julia Vanderstreet (West Bridgewater, MA).

Wheaton junior Liz Helmreich (Sanford, ME) used a rebound shot to break up the shutout at 66:33. Sophomore Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, NY) and junior Lauren Bartlett (Middlebury, VT) also registered a shot on-goal for the guests.

Senior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) and freshman Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) each made a stop for WPI.

Starting sophomore goalkeeper Greta Reilly (Manchester, NH) halted six attempts and junior Morgan Karnes (Durham, ME) tallied three stops for Wheaton.  

In all, WPI took 23 of the 28 shots in the game and doubled up the Lyons (10-5) in penalty corners.

The Engineers are idle due to exams and resume action Saturday when the team heads to MIT for an 11am appointment. Wheaton entertains Wesleyan Tuesday at 7pm.
