Westwood, MA --- WPI's Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) has been selected as the NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Gannon only had to make four saves in a 1-0 triumph over Springfield Saturday. In addition to being the second win over the Pride in three seasons, the Engineers are currently one of seven teams to boast an undefeated record in Division III. Division I North Carolina and Division II West Chester are also without a loss as of Monday.
Of the Engineers 10 wins, four have been complete-game shutouts for Gannon and three have been shared shutouts. Nationally, the sophomore ranks sixth in goals against average (0.46) and 11th in save percentage (.840). The team, meanwhile continues to lead in scoring margin (4.40) and moved to the top of the chart in shutouts per game (0.70).
Gannon is the first WPI defensive honoree since teammate Lindsey Giorgi on October 15, 2018, and first Engineer netminder since Karen Mushrall on October 10, 2017. MIT's Amanda Garafalo claimed this week's offensive nod.
After focusing on final exams this week, Field Hockey (10-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) is back in action Saturday with a trip to Wheaton for a noon start.
