Dutson Strikes Twice as Field Hockey Delivers Cosenza First WPI Victory

Rachel Drasser, Field Hockey

Salem, MA --- With a 5-0 shutout victory at Salem State on Thursday night, head coach Kim Cosenza earned her first career victory at WPI in thrilling fashion thanks to a handful of penalty corner goals by the Engineers.

WPI (1-1) finished with 15 penalty corner attempts on the night, capitalizing on five of them while taking an overwhelming 21 shots on goal forcing the Salem State (2-1) keeper to make 16 saves in the game and handing the Vikings their first loss of the season.

The Engineers' ultimate game winner was scored 10 minutes into the game by senior Zoe Januszewski (Ventura, CA), who also picked up her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner. Januszewski's initial shot was blocked, her second try was saved by Salem State goalie Kelli McCarthy (Foxboro, MA), but third time was a charm when she picked up the rebound and sent it into the back of the net for the score to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, WPI piled on a pair of goals behind the offense of sophomore Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) and senior Kelly Makechnie (Hampton Falls, NH). Meinhold added another goal to the total in the 21st minute, when she corralled a Januszewski rejection off of a yet another penalty corner and sent it back past McCarthy. Makechnie's goal also came following a penalty corner, this time off of an Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) insertion, just before the second half.

Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) added yet another goal to the total in the third quarter to make it a 4-0 game.  The rookie's initial shot was saved, but the Engineers made the most of another second chance as Drasser corralled the rebound and put it back.

Dutson added another goal for good measure, in the 57th minute of action after a flurry of Engineer offense. Dutson actually set up yet another penalty corner, snuck in and pocketed the goal for her first career score.

The Engineers will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday afternoon during a 3pm match with Western New England in the team's home opener.

Salem State will also head to Worcester on Saturday for a 4pm game at Worcester State.
