Dishong, Meinhold, Drasser Guide Field Hockey Past Western New England 3-1

WORCESTER -- Senior Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) led the way in a 3-1 WPI field hockey victory over Western New England on Saturday afternoon.

The win marked the second-straight for the Engineers who improved to 2-1 on the season. Western New England fell to 1-2 in 2021 with the loss.

Dishong finished with a pair of goals in the outing, marking her second multi-goal game of her career while sophomore Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) added a pair of assists on the day. Junior Rachel Drasser (Lunenberg, MA) also added a goal in the Engineers' victory. Junior Emily Campbell (Goffstown, NH) netted the Golden Bears' lone goal of the outing.

Dishong got the scoring going for the Engineers in the second quarter following WPI's second penalty corner of the day. After an Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) insertion, Meinhold fired off an initial shot that was rejected by Western New England goaltender Laura Dion (Cumberland, RI). Dishong corralled the rejection and fired to the near post for the Engineers' first goal of the day in the 18th minute of action.

After a quiet couple of quarters, the Engineers netted back-to-back goals to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when Dishong scored yet again off of yet another penalty corner. Meinhold crossed a pass to Dishong who sent it past Dion for the score in the 50th minute.

Just a few minutes later, Drasser made it a three-goal game in the 54th minute of play utilizing yet another corner attempt, taking a pass from Meinhold and sending it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Golden Bears would get one back before the final whistle, when, after three-straight corner attempts, Campbell got Western New England on the board.

Dion finished with one save and three goals allowed on the day for Western New England while junior Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) allowed just the one goal on five shots faced, while making four saves in the outing for WPI.

The Engineers will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 4pm at home against Fitchburg State, while Western New England remains on the road to face Roger Williams next Saturday, Sept. 18 at 3pm.
